BRAIN RING “PHYSICS OF MATERIALS: FROM THE SCHOOL COURSE TO ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGIES”

At Karaganda Industrial University, as part of the methodological week of the Department of Metallurgy and Materials Science, an intellectual game for school students — the Brain Ring “Physics of Materials: From the School Course to Engineering Technologies” — was held. The event became a platform where school knowledge of physics received practical engineering continuation, and participants were able to see how familiar textbook topics work in real life.

The game was attended by teams from Secondary School 24 under the supervision of Yermekbay A.S., and Secondary School 27 under the supervision of Antipova A.I. and Kolesnikova A.N. The Brain Ring program combined dynamic rounds, mini-experiments, and engineering cases aimed at developing logical thinking, the ability to argue, and teamwork skills.

The organizers once again proved that physics is not about “frightening formulas,” but a universal language of engineering technologies. Forces, heat, electricity, and magnetism in real engineering turn into materials, structures, and solutions that surround us every day: in smartphones and elevators, bridges and buses, heating radiators, and modern building structures.

As part of the warm-up round “Material Around Us,” teams answered rapid-fire questions, demonstrating erudition and team drive. In the round “Materials Science Detective,” students selected the optimal material for a smartphone корпус, analyzing the strength, thermal conductivity, weight, and cost of various options and justifying their choice from the standpoint of engineering feasibility.

The case “Material of the Future” invited participants to develop a solution to an urban problem by applying knowledge about material properties and presenting their own engineering vision.

In the mini-case “The Secret of the Great Wall of China,” teams received a “black box” with seven ingredients, deciphered their purpose, and produced samples of construction materials inspired by the historical experience of building the Great Wall of China.

In the round “AI-Mineralogist,” participants identified minerals from photographs using artificial intelligence tools and provided brief descriptions, demonstrating how digital technologies are integrated into modern materials science.

According to the results of the competition, the team of School 27 received the 1st Degree Diploma, while School 24 took second place. All participants were awarded certificates and sweet prizes. Special gratitude was expressed to the jury — Professor Romanov V.I., Associate Professor Aitkenov N.B., and Associate Professor Zobnin N.N., who not only evaluated the performances but also engaged the participants in professional discussion, asked questions, and gave valuable recommendations.

The main outcome of the meeting was the understanding that mistakes are an integral part of the engineering path, and respect for each other’s ideas forms a strong and cohesive team. The Brain Ring became a clear confirmation that physics is the foundation of future technologies and the first step toward the engineering profession.
