On April 10 in Astana, a round table on the topic “The Contribution of
Universities to the Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals” was
held at the Institute of Economic Research with the support of the UN Country
Team. This event became a platform for a systematic discussion of the role of
universities in achieving the SDGs and for developing coordinated approaches to
integrating the principles of sustainable development into the higher education
system. The event was attended by 114 participants representing 89 universities
of Kazakhstan. The Karaganda Industrial University was represented at the round
table by Vyacheslav Aleksandrovich Kunaev, Director of the Department of
Science and Innovation.
The round table was held in three stages: the official opening, panel
sessions, and an interactive workshop.
During the interactive group discussions held after the plenary session,
the work was carried out in the following thematic areas: integration of SDG
principles into university management systems; universities as a driving force
in developing skills for sustainable development; university research as a
factor in ensuring sustainable transformation; strengthening the role of
students as leaders in the implementation of the SDGs; formation of a
gender-inclusive university environment; strengthening partnerships between
universities and stakeholders; development of the human capital of
universities.
The results of the discussion were presented in a final presentation for
each thematic block and summarized by the moderator of the event. Based on the
outcomes of the round table, the participants developed practice-oriented
recommendations that will contribute to the effective integration of
sustainable development principles into the higher education system of
Kazakhstan.
