КARIU DEVELOPS DOUBLE DEGREE PROGRAMS

On March 5, 2026, a workshop on "Development of double-degree education programs" was held at Karaganda Industrial University. The event brought together the university's management, deans of faculties, heads of educational programs and the teaching staff. The workshop was held with the support of the British Council and was aimed at discussing strategic, academic and organizational aspects of the development of double-degree education programs. Galina Aleksandrovna Sivyakova, Member of the Board and Vice–Rector for Academic Affairs, delivered a welcoming speech. In her speech, she stressed the importance of internationalization of education and the need for systematic preparation of the university for the launch and maintenance of double-degree education programs. During the first session, the participants discussed the importance of double-degree education programs, noting that they represent not only an opportunity to obtain two diplomas, but also an effective mechanism for jointly creating knowledge, competencies and solutions for real-world tasks. Special attention was paid to the added value of such programs for students, faculty, and the university, as well as their role at the regional, national, and international levels. A separate section was devoted to the conceptual framework and international terminology. The participants examined the differences between academic mobility and transnational education. It was noted that clarity of definitions is an important condition for trust in qualifications, transparency of educational trajectories and the correct positioning of educational programs in the international arena. The Vice-rector for Internationalization and Infrastructure Development of Kokshetau University named after Sh. made an expert presentation on the regulatory and institutional framework of double-degree education programs in Kazakhstan. Ualikhanov — Zhailagul Sagyndykova. The practical part of the workshop included group work. The participants identified the university's role in the implementation of dual degree programs, identified the strengths of educational programs that could interest foreign partners, and analyzed internal and external stakeholder groups. The discussion focused on employers, students, graduates, professional associations, organizations providing internships, as well as regulators and accreditation bodies. The participants emphasized that a successful program should take into account the expectations not only of partner universities, but also of the labor market, society, and the education quality assurance system. The final part of the event was devoted to the development and implementation of double-degree education programs, including the formation of curricula, credit allocation, academic recognition and organization of student mobility. The participants reviewed the principles of comparing disciplines, equalizing learning outcomes and distributing the academic load, noting that the key criterion for program comparability should be learning outcomes and their compliance with the partners' qualifications frameworks. The workshop became an important platform for professional dialogue and collaboration on the formation of an institutional approach to the development of double-degree education programs at the university. The results of the meeting will contribute to the development of international academic cooperation, strengthen the quality of educational programs and expand opportunities for students and teachers.
