CRITICAL THINKING AGAINST PSEUDOSCIENCE

On April 7, a scientific and educational seminar titled “Critical Thinking in Science: Recognizing Pseudoscientific Theories and Methods” was held at Karaganda Industrial University. The event brought together students and master’s degree candidates interested in developing scientific literacy and information analysis skills.

During the seminar, participants were reminded of the fundamental principles of scientific knowledge. Special attention was given to the role of observation, experimentation, and logical analysis as the foundations for forming reliable knowledge. The speakers emphasized that a systematic approach and the verifiability of results are what distinguish science from any unproven theories.

A separate section was devoted to the differences between scientific and pseudoscientific approaches. Participants were informed about the typical characteristics of pseudoscientific claims—lack of an evidence base, appeal to emotions, distortion of facts, and disregard for the scientific method.

The practical part of the seminar generated particular interest. Participants were introduced to tools for assessing the reliability of information, including a checklist for analyzing questionable theories. Using specific examples, methods for identifying pseudoscientific concepts and critically analyzing common misconceptions were demonstrated.

The organizers noted that such events play an important role in fostering a conscious attitude toward information among young people. The seminar contributed to the development of critical thinking, highlighting the importance of distinguishing scientific knowledge from pseudoscientific claims in today’s information environment.
