Program Description

The master’s program in Economics prepares graduates to understand the complex interrelationships of economic activity in business, policy development, and other analytical functions related to evaluating business performance, public projects, or forecasting various economic and business scenarios. Master’s studies include: the use of proprietary teaching materials and delivery of selected courses in English; orientation toward the regional labor market; availability of elective courses updated annually; integration of the educational process, research activities, and modern professional practice; cooperation with leading universities from neighboring and distant countries. The practical implementation of the program is achieved through: analysis of real-case studies based on the experience of JSC “Qarmet” and other large enterprises — strategic and business partners; lectures and master classes delivered by invited practitioners and international professors; implementation of applied and service-oriented projects; participation in joint research and development initiatives and projects. Within the framework of existing agreements, master’s students undertake internships at leading enterprises of the region.

Enrollment and Study Procedure

Educational program of Astrakhan State Technical University (ASTU): Master’s program in the field of study 38.04.01 Economics Profile: Economic Theory and Financial and Credit Relations Admission and Study Procedure An applicant is admitted only to the educational program 7M04103 “Economics” in the following cases: if the applicant refuses to study under the double-degree educational program; if the applicant is admitted and enrolled at Karaganda Industrial University (KarIU) in January of the relevant calendar year; if the applicant has passed the entrance examinations for admission to KarIU under the educational program 7M04103 “Economics”, but failed to pass the entrance examinations at ASTU for admission to the educational program 38.04.01 Economics. In this case, the student fulfills all the requirements of the educational program with a duration of 2 years at KarIU. Upon successful completion of the final attestation under the educational program 7M04103 “Economics”, the graduate is awarded only a KarIU diploma. An applicant is admitted to the double-degree educational program 7M04103 “Economics” / 38.04.01 Economics in the following case: upon consent to study under the double-degree educational program and successful completion of entrance examinations at both KarIU and ASTU. In this case, the student fulfills all the requirements of the educational program with a total duration of 2 years, following the 1+1 scheme (the first year at KarIU and the second year at ASTU). The student completes one master’s thesis, the topic of which is jointly agreed upon by KarIU and ASTU, and undergoes final attestation offline at one of the universities by mutual agreement, while the examination board of the partner university participates in the thesis defense online. Upon successful completion of the final attestation, the graduate is awarded two diplomas: a KarIU diploma under the educational program 7M04103 “Economics”; an ASTU diploma under the educational program 38.04.01 Economics.

Training of academic and teaching staff with advanced scientific-pedagogical and research training, capable of innovative activities in the fields of science, education, management, and economics.

Professional Activity Sphere

A graduate of this educational program may carry out analytical and organizational and managerial (administrative) activities in the following areas: analysis of the functioning of sectoral and regional markets; analysis of business entities of various organizational and legal forms; improvement of enterprise management systems; development of economic strategies and policies of enterprises; regulation of socio-economic relations at the state, sectoral, and intra-firm levels.

Qualifications and Positions

Graduates of the educational programs 7M04103 “Economics” / 38.04.01 “Economics” are eligible to work in various economic structures, sociological services, organizational units of management systems, intersectoral complexes, public administration bodies, joint-stock companies, business partnerships, and non-profit organizations, as well as in innovation centers, and may engage in entrepreneurial activity in the following positions: a) managerial positions: deputy director (commercial director, vice president) for commercial affairs; human resources director; director for economic affairs (chief economist); financial director; head of the laboratory for labor organization and production management; head of the labor organization and remuneration department; head of the planning and economic department; head of the laboratory for technical and economic research; head of the logistics department; program and portfolio manager; b) specialist and staff positions: specialists in economics and statistics; employees of financial and economic departments and analytical units; research fellows of public and private research organizations; senior and mid-level specialists of enterprises, firms, and organizations of various industries and forms of ownership; c) teaching activity: a Master of Economic Sciences in the scientific and pedagogical track may work as a lecturer at higher education institutions.
