On February 26, a round table titled “Green Agenda and Industrial Transition: Sustainable Solutions for Energy and Metallurgy” was held at Karaganda Industrial University within the framework of the Erasmus+ project Green Deal for Central Asian Universities (GDCAU). Representatives of the university and regional industrial enterprises participated in the event and discussed issues related to sustainable development, industrial decarbonization, and the implementation of green technologies.

On February 24, Karaganda Industrial University held the environmental campaign “Clean Campus — A Waste-Free Future.” Students participated in cleaning the campus and collecting plastic waste. The event concluded with an eco-session where experts discussed environmental safety and waste separation with students.

On February 11, KarIU hosted the open dialogue “Green Initiatives” dedicated to sustainable development and environmental projects. Participants discussed current environmental challenges, explored ongoing initiatives, and exchanged ideas on promoting the green agenda.

On December 9–10, KarIU hosted a training titled “Training of Trainers: Updating Courses Based on Sustainable Education” within the Erasmus+ GDCAU project. The training aimed to modernize course syllabi and integrate sustainable development principles into educational programs. The training was conducted by senior experts Dairbekova G.S. and Zhautykov B.A. Participants explored key elements of sustainable education, worked with practical cases, and discussed ways to integrate environmental, social, and economic aspects as well as the Sustainable Development Goals into academic courses.

Karaganda Industrial University has opened the Center for Sustainable Technologies and Green Development (Green Deal Center) within the framework of the ERASMUS+ project “Green Deal for Central Asian Universities (GDCAU)” (2024–2027). The project aims to strengthen the role of Central Asian universities in promoting sustainable development and supporting the transition to a green economy. The Center will serve as a platform for cooperation between universities, businesses, government institutions, and civil society organizations. Its activities focus on developing educational programs, research, and practical initiatives related to sustainable development, green technologies, and ESG principles.

On October 21, Karaganda Industrial University held an environmental campaign as part of the national project “Taza Kazakhstan.” Students collected plastic bottles for recycling and exchanged them for small gifts. The campaign was organized by student volunteers from the “Shanyrak” Volunteer Center. Thanks to active participation, four containers of plastic were collected, demonstrating students’ contribution to promoting environmental awareness.

On September 26, Karaganda Industrial University held an award ceremony for the winners of the regional environmental online Olympiad “Ecosana.” Students from five universities of the Karaganda region participated in the competition, answering questions related to environmental issues and sustainable development. KarIU students achieved outstanding results, with 39 participants receiving diplomas and prizes, making the university the leader in the number of awardees. The Olympiad was organized by the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management of the Karaganda Region within the “Ecocourse” project aimed at promoting environmental awareness among youth.

From June 27 to 29, 2025, a field seminar for faculty and staff was held at the “Polytech” recreation area of KarTU in Karkaraly. The event aimed to enhance professional competencies, strengthen teamwork, and implement the trade union program. The seminar included discussions on employees’ rights and the role of the Ombudsman, as well as activities promoting a healthy lifestyle and environmental initiatives. Participants also discussed the implementation of sustainable practices and green energy and took part in team-building and motivational sessions.

KarIU Participates in the Erasmus+ GDCAU International Project From May 11 to 14, 2025, an international seminar of the Erasmus+ project “Green Deal for Central Asian Universities (GDCAU)” was held at Constructor University in Bremen, Germany. The event brought together representatives of universities from Central Asia and Europe. Karaganda Industrial University was represented by Saule Kamarova, Head of the Department of Energy, and Anastasia Chvanova, Head of the Department of Artificial Intelligence Technologies. Participants discussed integrating sustainable development principles into educational programs, establishing Green Deal Centers at universities, and strengthening cooperation with businesses to promote green initiatives.

Energy engineering students at Karaganda Industrial University presented projects focused on renewable energy and energy efficiency. These include studies on the effective use of sunlight in buildings and a model of a mini wind power plant for small farms. Practical solutions are also implemented at the university—for example, computers in one laboratory are powered by solar panels. Such projects help students apply their knowledge in practice and promote environmental awareness.

Students of the “Alive” Environmental Club at Karaganda Industrial University plan to create an alley of rare plants for Temirtau on the university campus. The key feature of the project is that the seedlings are grown by the students themselves from seeds and cuttings. During practical activities, students learned plant propagation techniques and prepared seedlings of catalpa, serviceberry, spruce, larch, lilac, and rowan. In the future, these plants will form a decorative alley on the university campus. The “Alive” Environmental Club currently unites about 50 students who actively promote environmental initiatives such as greening projects, waste separation, and responsible consumption.

The event also included the opening of the student environmental club “Alive.” Participants learned about sustainable development principles, attended a workshop on environmental projects, and discussed recycling technologies and responsible consumption.

PhD Saule Nurtazayevna Kamarova, Head of the Department of Energy, held a round table with 3rd–4th year students dedicated to sustainable development and green transformation. Participants discussed key steps toward environmentally friendly technologies, including reducing carbon emissions, using renewable energy sources, implementing energy-efficient solutions, and the role of individuals in building a sustainable future. The event helped raise students’ environmental awareness and highlighted the importance of training specialists capable of implementing green technologies.
