History of the University

The Karaganda Industrial University was opened in 1963 as a technical technical university at the Karaganda Metallurgical Plant by government resolutions of the USSR and the Kazakh SSR.

Today, the university has 3 faculties: Metallurgy and Mechanical Engineering, Energy, Transport and Management Systems, Economics and Construction, 10 departments with 140 teachers. The university also includes a Technical and Economic College.

Eighteen university teachers have the title of "Best University Teacher of the Republic of Kazakhstan", 11 teachers have the title of "Honorary Worker of Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan".

Educational work

The University provides training in 25 bachelor's degree programs, 20 master's degree programs and 5 doctoral degree programs. All educational programs have been developed jointly with employers based on professional standards, taking into account the Atlas of New Professions of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the regional map of professions.

In 2022, the university participated in a pilot project for an applied bachelor's degree in 2 educational programs: Chemical Technology of Organic Substances and Thermal Power Engineering. The project is being implemented jointly with JSC ArcelorMittal Temirtau.

The University is doing a lot of work to strengthen ties with large multinational companies and industrial enterprises, such as ArcelorMittal Temirtau JSC, Kazakhmys Corporation JSC, Kazchrome JSC, QazTehna LLP, Central Asia Cement JSC, Temirtau Electrometallurgical Combine LLP, Aktobe Rail and Block Plant JSC.

The University has 13 branches of departments at leading enterprises and research institutes of the city and the region. KarIU is the only university in Kazakhstan with a pilot industrial site with semi–industrial metallurgical and rolling equipment and operating models of a blast furnace and converter.

The University has a Metallurgy Center with 12 laboratories, a Research Institute for Construction Production and a Center for Energy-efficient Technologies and Energy Audit.

The university library contains about 300,000 volumes of educational and scientific literature.

In 2023, there were 2 summer schools. This is an IT school and a Chemistry school. The IT school worked together with specialists from ArcelorMittal Temirtau JSC, where students gained skills in working and maintaining SAP, one of the world's leading software solutions for business process management.

The university annually increases the number of undergraduate educational grants. Employment is consistently above 90%. The university annually provides benefits and discounts for socially vulnerable and talented students.

KarIU is actively developing scientific research in the following areas: creation of new technologies, products and services for the metallurgical industry; organization and conduct of fundamental and applied scientific research; commercialization of design developments and implementation of contractual work; organization of experiments on the introduction of innovative technologies in the educational process.

Currently, the university has 18 research projects totaling 883.1 million tenge. Research funding increased from 0.09 million tenge in 2020 to 301 million tenge in 2023.

Over the past two years, the number of university publications in international peer-reviewed WoS databases & Scopus has doubled in size, from 38 in 2020 to 82 in 2022. During the same period, 42 protection documents for inventions and intellectual property were obtained.

The University is actively involved in the international academic community. In 2022, 6 CarIU students studied at Gazi University of the Republic of Turkey in the fall semester.

KarIU is one of the 10 Kazakh universities that have won the Going Global Partnerships program conducted by the British Council.

Development of the material, technical and laboratory base

The educational and scientific laboratory base of the university provides all types of laboratory and practical classes, scientific and research work of students provided for in the curricula, and complies with current sanitary and technical standards, as well as the requirements of the State Mandatory Standard of Higher Education.

In addition to the educational and laboratory stands, the scientific equipment of the engineering laboratory is used in the educational process: the JSM-5910 scanning electron microscope, the JEM-2100 transmission electron microscope, the LEICA optical microscope, the general-purpose X-ray diffractometer DRON-6, the X-ray measuring RICOR complex, the THERMOSCAN-2 analytical instrument, the unique Thermo-Calc AB software package and others

The following student government bodies operate at the university on a permanent basis: the Youth Affairs Committee; the student Parliament; the Abadan debate Club; the student council of dormitories No. 1 and No. 2; the Council of elders; the Sanaly Urpak student Club; the Kamkor Volunteer Center.

The university has a poetry club "Parasat", Kazakh and Russian KVN Leagues, a debate club "Abadan", sports sections in 9 areas, and a press center.

CarIU students take an active part in the work of the CarIU Young Leader School every year.

As part of the social protection and support of talented youth, the university's management is constantly working to provide financial assistance to orphaned students, low-income students, and support talented and active youth. KarIU grants are allocated for well-performing students of this category by the decision of the Academic Council.

Young people are sponsored to participate in scientific conferences, subject Olympiads, and creative contests.

The University has 2 dormitories with 890 beds, catering facilities (2 buffets and a dining room with 80 seats), and medical care.

Karaganda Industrial University was awarded the IAAR EUR Technical University Award as the best technical university in the International Ranking "IAAR Eurasian University Ranking (IAAR-EUR) - 2023".

In the ranking of the best technical universities in Kazakhstan in 2022, they took 7th place (in 2021 – 9th place).

Revenues have increased by more than 2 times compared to 2020 (in 2020, the budget was 893 million tenge, and in 2023, the revenue side is planned to be 2.01 billion tenge).

The task of increasing the income from scientific activities from 0 tenge to 300 million tenge has been completed.

Two dissertation councils have been opened for the defense of doctoral dissertations in the fields of Metallurgy and Nanotechnology.

The volume of funds spent on the development of digital infrastructure increased by 87%. The increase in publications in international rating publications is 2 times.

26 university students became winners and prize-winners of creative, intellectual, sports competitions and Olympiads at the national and international levels, in 2023 this figure increased to 33 winners and prize-winners.

High-quality repairs of two dormitories were carried out for students, landscaping, household appliances, bedding, furniture worth 25 million tenge were purchased.

For its dynamic development, Karaganda Industrial University was awarded the "Star of Quality" award at the VI Central Asian International Forum in October 2022 based on the results of the Eurasian University Ranking.
