General Information

The department is one of the leading structural units of the university, providing training for highly qualified specialists for the chemical, pharmaceutical, industrial, and environmental sectors. The educational, research, and innovation activities of the department are focused on developing professional competencies that meet the modern requirements of science, industry, and the labor market.

The training of students is based on the integration of fundamental chemical and technological knowledge with applied aspects of modern production, standardization, occupational safety, environmental protection, and industrial safety. The curricula of educational programs are regularly updated in accordance with state educational standards, professional standards, and the needs of the real sector of the economy.

The academic staff of the department consists of around 30 highly qualified specialists, including Doctors and Candidates of Sciences, PhD holders, professors, associate professors, senior lecturers, as well as industry practitioners with experience in the industrial and pharmaceutical sectors. Faculty members actively participate in research projects, grant programs, and international collaborations, publish in high-ranking scientific journals, and integrate research outcomes into the educational process.

The department pays special attention to the development of students’ scientific potential by engaging undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students in research activities, coursework and thesis projects, as well as participation in scientific conferences, competitions, and startup initiatives. The educational process is supported by a modern laboratory and teaching infrastructure and is aimed at developing practice-oriented skills that are in demand in the chemical, pharmaceutical, and related industries.

Graduates of the department are successfully employed in chemical and pharmaceutical enterprises, research organizations, testing laboratories, industrial and environmental safety authorities, and also continue their education and research careers at leading scientific centers both in Kazakhstan and abroad.

Department History

The Department of Chemical Technology and Ecology has a rich history and more than sixty years of scientific and pedagogical tradition, closely related to the development of industry in Central Kazakhstan.

On September 1, 1963, the VTUZ Plant was established on the basis of the Karaganda Metallurgical Plant, which became the basis for training engineering personnel for the chemical and metallurgical industries. In accordance with Order No. 2 of November 1, 1963, the Department of Chemical Technology was established at the Temirtau Technical Technical University, which laid the foundation for chemical technology education in the region.

In 1965, as a result of structural development, the department was divided into independent divisions:

Physical and Analytical Chemistry,

General Chemistry,

and Chemical Production Technology,

this made it possible to deepen the training of specialists and expand scientific areas.

In 1996, after the Department of Mineral Processing was joined, the specialized areas were merged into the Department of Chemistry, Chemical Technology and Mineral Processing. The head of the department during this period was Professor, Doctor of Technical Sciences Muzychuk V.D., under whose leadership the foundations of interdisciplinary training of specialists for the chemical and mining and metallurgical industries were laid.

Since 1998, the department has been headed by Associate Professor, Candidate of Chemical Sciences Arbuzov V.A., and the department has been renamed "Chemical Technology" again, focusing its educational and scientific activities on modern chemical engineering processes and production technologies.

In 2007, the Ecology section was included in the structure of the department, which led to the expansion of educational programs and the renaming of the department to Chemical Technology and Ecology, reflecting modern requirements for environmental and industrial safety of production.

Since September 2018, the Department of Chemical Technology and Ecology has been headed by Candidate of Chemical Sciences, Associate Professor Saule Kabieva Kazzhanovna, under whose leadership the department is actively developing, implementing multi-level educational programs, strengthening research activities and expanding cooperation with industrial and pharmaceutical enterprises.

Educational Activities

The teaching staff of the Department of Chemical Technology and Ecology actively carries out educational and methodological activities aimed at improving the quality of the educational process, the introduction of modern educational technologies and the development of digital forms of education. In recent years, teaching materials on the disciplines of educational programs have been significantly updated; online courses have been developed for which copyright certificates issued by an authorized state body have been obtained.
The teachers of the department have prepared and published textbooks and teaching aids recommended by the Republican Educational and Methodological Association of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan (RUMO MNiVO RK), which are used in the educational process in the implementation of bachelor's, master's and doctoral programs.

Additional and continuing education
Additional education programs are implemented on the basis of the department. Advanced training courses "Laboratory assistant of chemical analysis" were conducted, as a result of which the students were awarded the microqualification "Laboratory assistant of chemical analysis". These courses are focused on developing practical skills that are in demand in analytical and production laboratories.

Online education and digital resources
The faculty of the department has developed a massive open online course (MOOC), hosted on the national educational platforms BilimLand and the National Open Education Platform of Kazakhstan Ashyk University. Online courses provide access to quality education and are used in the educational process as an element of blended and distance learning.

Human resources and scientific personnel training
The personnel potential of the department is consistently developing. The teaching staff consists of 2 Doctors of sciences, 7 candidates of sciences and 3 PhD doctors, which ensures a high level of academic competence of the department (55%). Currently, 2 doctoral students are undergoing the final stage of dissertation preparation and are planning their defense, which indicates the progressive development of the scientific schools of the department and the succession of personnel.

According to educational programs
8D07101 – Chemical technology of organic substances,
7M07102 – Chemical Technology of organic Substances,
7M11201 – Industrial and environmental safety
a steady increase in the number of undergraduates and doctoral students is noted annually, which indicates the demand for the scientific and educational potential of the department.

Academic mobility of students
The department actively supports the internal and external academic mobility of students. Students and undergraduates study at foreign and domestic universities as part of academic exchanges, mastering specialized disciplines in chemical, pharmaceutical and biomedical fields.
As part of the external academic mobility, students of the department studied at universities in Turkey and Bulgaria, where they studied pharmaceutical and chemical disciplines.
As part of internal academic mobility, students and undergraduates master individual disciplines at leading universities in Karaganda, including medical and technical universities.

Research Activities

The Department of Chemical Technology and Ecology carries out active and effective research activities aimed at the development of fundamental and applied research in the field of chemical technology, organic synthesis, environmentally oriented processes and industrial safety. The scientific research of the department is focused on solving urgent problems of the chemical, mining, metallurgical and pharmaceutical industries, as well as on training competitive scientific personnel.
