КARIU STUDENTS DEVOTED ONE OF THE SCHOOL DAYS ENTIRELY TO SAVING THE ENVIRONMENT

Use public transport more often, separate garbage and save electricity – students of Karaganda Industrial University decided to lead an active eco-life. Within the framework of the republican project "Taza Kazakhstan", the university hosted a number of events under the motto "This is our battle for the future".
One of the significant events for КarIU on February 19 was the opening of the first eco-club "Alive" within the walls of the university. This is a community of active like-minded people who are not indifferent to the fate of the world around them and who want to work together to improve it by implementing original ideas, projects and practices.
"Absolutely all students who are not indifferent to the environmental issue at our university, the region and the country as a whole will be able to join our ranks," said Elena Sitdikova, lecturer at the Department of Chemical Technology and Ecology, head of the Alive eco-club. - We are glad that the university administration fully supports our idea and provides all possible support."
The opening ceremony of the eco-club was attended by Temirtau ecologist and head of NGO "Reflection" Elena Varganova. This is a person who embodies the ideas of ecology in practice, working with children and youth. During the meeting with the students, Elena Varganova introduced them to the basic principles of sustainable development, and also conducted a master class on sustainable planning of various projects.
On the same day, special bins for separate garbage collection were installed in the university lobby. Separate boxes are provided for paper, plastic, glass and metal. The campaign was sponsored by the Temirtau branch of the AMANAT party. Students received fruits or ice cream for their active participation in garbage collection and sorting.
"We are pleased to support such student initiatives," Nurkeldi Omarkhanov, chairman of the AMANAT branch of the party, which unites party members working at Qarmet JSC, assured. – Today, the issue of how to protect the environment and help the ecology of the industrial region is particularly acute. As we can see, students realize that everyone can contribute to nature conservation."
"The action is necessary and useful," said Jasmin Turgymbaeva, a 2nd-year student. – The earth does not belong only to us - to one generation, and our task is to preserve it in a habitable state.
Separately, the students noted the mischievous "Ekoshu" - a growth doll that not only welcomed the students, but also actively involved them in the action.
The eco-day ended with a round table at which students discussed knowledge relevant to the whole world about recycling technologies, consumer culture and zero waste policy. Eco-activists called on their peers to join the new student movement, share their ideas and projects for their implementation both on the territory of the university and beyond. And, of course, follow the basic rules of "green" behavior.
- Within the framework of the republican project "Taza Kazakhstan", the simplest but most effective eco-habits are actively promoted in КarIU, - said Nina Popova, Director of the Department of Educational Work and Youth Policy of КarIU. – For example, the university minimizes the use of disposable products. Students, faculty, and staff of КarIU use reusable dishes, cups, and reusable beverage bottles (shakers) in the dining room and buffets. Free stationary drinking water filter installations have been installed in the academic buildings of the university. Also, students and staff periodically take part in "Bike Days" when they get to the university on environmentally friendly transport.
In addition, university students participate in city actions on an ongoing basis, clean yards and squares from garbage and put them in order, and plant trees. Now the work in this direction will be continued with a vengeance.
