КARIU STUDENTS PLAN TO PLANT A UNIQUE ALLEY FOR TEMIRTAU

The structural landing should appear on the territory of the university. Its special feature will be rare plants for the city. In addition, the students decided not to buy the seedlings, but to grow them themselves.
The initiators of the idea were the participants of the student ecological club "Alive". Previously, the students had already participated in landscaping campaigns both on the territory of the university and in the city. Future metallurgists, power engineers and builders are well aware of how important "green lungs" are for our industrial city. However, students are sure that planting should bring not only practical benefits, but also aesthetic pleasure. And, of course, a student project cannot be costly.
- We have already faced such a situation that we want to organize and hold a landscaping campaign, but there are no funds for this, - says Elena Sitdikova, lecturer at the Department of Chemical Technology and Ecology at КarIU, head of the Alive eco-club. – That's why we decided to grow seedlings from seeds and cuttings on our own. Temirtau ecologist Elena Varganova, head of the NGO Reflection, readily agreed to help us with this. She provided us with the necessary material, provided us with instructions and useful tips.
The realization of the idea began with a practical lesson. The students learned how to determine the viability of seeds and cuttings, and learned the secrets of successful cutting and care of sprouts. As a result of the lesson, the ecological club became the owner of seedlings, which will turn into full-fledged seedlings next year, including rare trees for the city.
For example, the natural habitat of the deciduous catalpa shrub is China, North America and the Caribbean islands. However, the ecologist assures that the decorative tree easily copes with frosts. The adaptation period is shortened if seedlings are grown locally from seeds.
- In one summer, a catalpa can grow up to one and a half meters high. The tree has an interesting shape, and it blooms beautifully," says Elena Varganova. – At the same time, catalpa has very large leaves, which is very important for our city. The larger the area of the leaves, the more they trap harmful substances from the atmospheric air. In this regard, the catalpa would be an excellent decoration for the streets of our city.
Another plant that is rarely found in Temirtau is irga. It blooms beautifully, actively bears fruit and brings health benefits. It has been proven that berries, leaves, and even kara irgi are natural multivitamins that have a positive effect on the entire body.
The students also rooted cuttings of spruce, larch, lilac and mountain ash. All these plants should get along well in one area, creating a multicolored cascade planting. It will be a bright spot on the university grounds at any time of the year.
- It's too early to draw conclusions, but the guys are certainly doing well. Interestingly, not only girls, but also boys wanted to propagate plants," said Elena Varganova. - Today, unfortunately, the information field in our phones takes up a huge amount of time for anyone, and to break away from it is a feat for many. And these guys were able to break away from the phone, left the house. Outside of classes, we came here and learned something, did something. I really hope that this is not a one-time event. We are ready for further communication, ready to share our experience.
Today, the ecological club "Alive" unites about 50 students. Activists are promoting separate garbage collection, reasonable consumption and zero waste. Anyone can join the club.
