It is never too late to study, we are sure at the Karaganda Industrial University. It opens annual free courses for older students. Older people are offered to increase legal, digital and financial literacy, as well as strengthen physical health.
Silver University, which is also called the University of the Third Age, is an international movement whose task is to create favorable conditions for the successful adaptation of older people in modern life, for self-education and self-improvement. It's kind of a club for older people. In KARIU, it opens twice a year. The next enrollment of students will end this week - April 4.
- The idea «Silver University» appeared within the framework of the concept of continuing education, - says Elena Kharchenko, director of the Department for Academic Policy of KARIU. - That is, our task is to improve the qualifications of not only our graduates, but also the older generation. In principle, there are no age restrictions. People from 45 to 80 years old come to study.
- How do you attract your students?
- «Silver University» students get a lot of advantages. First, it is new knowledge and skills. Older students have the opportunity to broaden their horizons, master new hobbies, improve memory and cognitive abilities. Secondly, it is communication and socialization: new acquaintances and the opportunity to share your experience with other people. Thirdly, students can attend various events and participate in interesting projects, that is, lead an active lifestyle. And finally, «Silver University» makes it possible to feel young and full of strength in a new environment.
- What exactly can your students learn?
- There will be five courses. The main ones are computer and financial literacy. In addition, yoga courses, chess games and the basics of entrepreneurship are provided. The training is conducted by experienced teachers. Classes will be held during the month 2 times a week for two hours.
- Many aged people fear that they will no longer be able to master digital technologies...
- Today it is already difficult to do without modern means of communication. An increasing number of government services are provided via computer or mobile apps. Therefore, there are practically no people who are not familiar with the computer at all. But even those with access to them may not always be able to take advantage of them without putting themselves in danger. Unfortunately, the number of crimes related to Internet fraud continues to grow, and most often elderly people become victims of scammers. The courses will tell you in detail and easily how to protect yourself from deception.
- What other useful knowledge do you offer?
- In just a month, students will learn how to work in a graphic editor, create their own pictures, fill out tables, register a mailbox and conduct correspondence. We also teach how to pay for various payments through mobile applications, shop online. At the end of the courses, students receive appropriate certificates. Some even find jobs after that.
