On September 3, Karaganda Industrial University held the grand opening of a new student sports center for judo, sambo, and Kazakh kuresi (Kazakh wrestling). This became the tenth free sports section available to students at the university.
The event took place in the university's sports hall and gathered students, faculty, staff, and guests. A special moment of the ceremony was the participation of the Chairman of the Temirtau City Maslikhat, Alexey Lomakin, who not only delivered a welcoming speech but also shared his personal story: in his youth, he successfully practiced judo, worked as a coach, and is convinced that this sport helped him develop discipline, confidence, and a drive to win.
"Judo is not just a sport. It's a philosophy that teaches you to respect your opponent, work on yourself, and never give up. I’m glad that students in Temirtau now have the opportunity to experience this sport right here at the university," — said Alexey Lomakin.
In his speech, Rector of Karaganda Industrial University Bakhyt Zhautykov emphasized that the development of student sports is one of the university’s key priorities:
"We already have nine sports sections, and each of them contributes to students’ health, team spirit, and personal growth. Wrestling is our next step — and it’s open to all students free of charge."
In addition to wrestling, KarIU students can participate in sports sections for football, volleyball, basketball, checkers, chess, togyz kumalak, assyk (traditional Kazakh games), table tennis, and power fitness. Any student can join a section for free by registering at the Department of Physical Education. Training is available for both beginners and experienced athletes.
The university continues to create opportunities for an active and fulfilling student life, and the opening of the Judo, Sambo, and Kazakh Kuresi Hall is further proof of that commitment.
