General Information

The department provides education in Kazakh, Russian, and English across all forms of study, including full-time and shortened programs, both under state educational grants and on a fee-paying basis.

Research activities are conducted on a regular basis in various areas aligned with the scientific interests of the department’s academic staff. Research results are actively published in scientific journals, including high-ranking peer-reviewed journals indexed in the Scopus and Web of Science databases, and are presented at conferences of various levels.

Innovative technologies are widely applied in the educational process, including virtual simulators for different metal rolling methods, as well as the modeling of technological processes using specialized software systems.

The department is equipped with a large number of educational laboratories and pilot industrial facilities featuring unique and modern equipment.

Students participate in international academic mobility programs, including study abroad opportunities in the Czech Republic and Poland. They also obtain micro-qualifications in their fields of study, acquiring practical skills through industrial training placements.

The future development of educational programs includes the establishment of joint educational programs and research areas with universities in Kazakhstan, CIS countries, and abroad, the expansion of academic mobility opportunities for bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral students, and the strengthening of cooperation with industry to provide students with in-demand micro-qualifications.

Department History

The history of the formation of the Department of Metal Forming is closely connected with the development of the Karaganda Metallurgical Combine and the city of Temirtau. The department was established in 1964, and in 1965 the first admission of students in the specialty “Metal Forming” was carried out for full-time study. In total, more than 3,000 engineers have been trained by the department. Many of them have become well-known research scientists, highly qualified specialists, and top-level production managers.

Graduates of the department include: Doctor of Technical Sciences O.N. Soskovets, President of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs; S.A. Kunakaev, former director of the Department of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources; former rectors, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor A.G. Dulyuk, and Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor A.B. Nayzabekov. Many graduates have built successful careers at various enterprises in Kazakhstan (JSC “QARMET”, LLP “Aktobe Rail and Beam Plant”, LLP Kaz-Metiz, etc.), Russia, and worldwide. The high level of graduate training enables them to find employment very quickly not only within the Karaganda region but also in other regions of Kazakhstan and the CIS.

Graduates of the department have made a significant contribution to its establishment and development by engaging in research and teaching activities, as well as by developing and maintaining international cooperation with partner universities in Russia, Belarus, Poland, the Czech Republic, Germany, and other countries.

Currently, the university faculty includes graduates such as senior lecturer A.R. Karipbaeva, Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor Zh.A. Ashkeev, PhD, Associate Professor S.S. Ainabekova, senior lecturer A.E. Ibraeva, PhD, Associate Professor A.S. Erzhanov, PhD, Professor E.A. Panin, PhD, Associate Professor A.V. Volokitin, and PhD A.B. Yesbolat.

The department conducts education in Kazakh, Russian, and English languages, with both full-time and reduced-duration programs, on a state educational grant basis as well as on a fee-paying basis.

Scientific work is carried out on a regular basis in various directions related to the research interests of the department staff. The results of these studies are actively published in scientific journals, including high-impact peer-reviewed journals indexed in Scopus and Web of Science databases, and are presented at conferences of various levels.

Innovative technologies are widely used in the educational process, including virtual simulators for various metal rolling methods and modeling of all processes using software systems.

The department also has a large number of laboratories and experimental-industrial facilities equipped with unique machinery.

Students participate in academic mobility programs abroad, including in the Czech Republic and Poland. They also obtain micro-qualifications in their specialties by gaining practical skills during industrial internships.

In the future development of the educational program, it is planned to develop joint programs and research directions with universities in Kazakhstan, the CIS, and other countries. The geography of academic mobility for bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral students will be expanded. Cooperation with industry will be strengthened to provide students with additional in-demand micro-qualifications.

Educational Activities

Work is underway to develop and revise educational and methodological documentation in the state, Russian and English languages:
• modular educational programs;
• educational and methodological complexes of disciplines;
• electronic educational and methodological complexes of disciplines;
• methodological guidelines for the implementation of coursework, laboratory, practical work and for independent work of students;
• syllabuses, work programs;
• lecture notes;
• textbooks, monographs and textbooks with the ISBN and © index;
• electronic methodological materials and virtual laboratory work;
• test materials and materials for knowledge control;
The teaching and methodological documentation is developed by the teaching staff of the department, discussed at the meetings of the department, coordinated by the dean of the faculty, the Director of Academic Policy and approved by the vice-rector for Academic Affairs of the university.
The content of educational programs is developed and reviewed by the Academic Committee, which includes teaching staff, representatives of employers, and students, in order to increase the effectiveness of the professional competence of future specialists.

Research Activities

The scientific activity of the department is carried out in accordance with the strategic and operational plans for the development of educational programs and the university and is focused on solving current scientific and industrial challenges. The department regularly participates in grant funding competitions of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the fields of fundamental and applied research, with active involvement of doctoral students, master’s students, and undergraduates.

The main results of research work are presented in the form of monographs, textbooks, scientific articles, patent applications, and conference reports at various levels, and are published in both national and international journals.

The main areas of the department’s scientific activity include:

• development and study of metal and alloy forming processes under pressure;
• creation and improvement of technologies for producing materials with fine-grained and ultrafine-grained structures;
• development of innovative rolling and plastic deformation technologies;
• research in processing and improving the quality of titanium and non-ferrous alloy products;
• digitalization of process control and quality management of metal products;
• development of technologies for producing and applying nanostructured and functional materials.

The results of research are reflected in the defense of doctoral and master’s theses, publications in scientific journals, including those with a non-zero impact factor, as well as participation in national and international scientific conferences and the creation of intellectual property objects.

The experimental and industrial research base of the department includes metallurgical and mechanical engineering enterprises, where pilot-industrial testing and implementation of scientific developments are carried out.

Material and Technical Resources

To conduct laboratory and research work within the bachelor’s degree programs “Metal Forming”, “Forging and Stamping Production in Mechanical Engineering”, “Standardization, Metrology and Certification”, the master’s degree program “Technology of Processing Advanced Structural Materials”, and the doctoral program “Nanotechnology in Engineering”, the Department of Metal Forming (OMD) is equipped with the following material and technical facilities and software systems.
