Inclusive Education

Karaganda Industrial University strives to create an accessible and comfortable educational environment for students with special educational needs and people with limited mobility (PLM).

To ensure barrier-free access to the university buildings, ramps and staff call buttons are installed, and designated parking spaces for persons with disabilities are provided.

For convenient orientation and navigation within the academic buildings, tactile floor guiding strips are installed, and tactile classroom signs with Braille are placed on the doors. Doors and stairways are marked with contrasting colors. The new building is equipped with an elevator for moving between floors. A tracked stair climber is also used to ensure safe and barrier-free movement between floors.

To support students with mobility impairments, the university provides walking aids, crutches, and a wheelchair.

Staff call buttons are available for prompt assistance.

Restrooms are adapted for PLM: specialized sanitary fixtures are installed, handrails are mounted, and hooks for clothing and crutches are provided.

Inclusive education rooms operate in the university buildings and are equipped with specialized facilities to support students and organize the learning process with due consideration of individual needs.

Karaganda Industrial University is implementing digital and adaptive educational solutions that ensure equal access to learning for all categories of students, including those with special educational needs.

Learning materials are provided in user-friendly and adaptive formats, taking into account individual educational needs. To support the learning process, the University’s electronic resources are used, including the Moodle learning management system and the Platonus automated information system .

Library and information support is provided through free access (via the University’s corporate account) to full-text resources, including:

IPR SMART e-library system

Republican Interuniversity Electronic Library

International abstracting and scientometric databases Scopus and Web of Science.

Students also have access to Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) developed by the University’s faculty , as well as the global online education platform Coursera .

To ensure objective and transparent assessment, proctoring technologies are used in the educational process.

The learning process is supported by assistive technologies and specialized equipment, including a digital magnifier, screen-reader software with speech synthesis, and sound amplification equipment for students with hearing impairments.

To expand opportunities for practice-oriented learning, the University uses virtual laboratories and simulators, enabling students to develop skills in a digital environment and complete practical assignments in a convenient format.

Academic inclusion at Karaganda Industrial University (KarIU) is implemented by creating conditions that enable every student to fully pursue an educational program, taking into account individual learning needs.

Key mechanisms of academic inclusion include:

- developing and delivering adapted educational programs;

- designing Individual Study Plans (ISPs) and, when necessary, an individual course completion schedule;

- applying flexible teaching methods, including case-based learning, practice-oriented instruction, project-based activities, digital simulations, and virtual simulators;

- using various formats for learning materials (electronic resources, multimedia content).

To ensure equal opportunities, the University provides reasonable academic accommodations, including:

- extended time for examinations and assessments;

- the use of assistive technologies;

- individualized assignments and alternative assessment formats (while maintaining required learning outcomes);

- administering exams in a separate room or online when necessary;

- providing academic advising, tutoring, and methodological support within the University’s capacity.

In implementing academic inclusion, the University follows the principles of equal access, non-discrimination, confidentiality, and objective assessment, ensuring a balance between student support and compliance with the academic requirements of the educational program.

HR policy and HR inclusion at the university are based on the principles of equal access and non-discrimination in employment. The University provides equal employment opportunities regardless of gender, age and other individual characteristics.

Special attention is paid to overcoming the gender imbalance in engineering and technical areas. Employees receive training on equality, diversity and inclusion, universal Learning Design (UDL), and non-discriminatory practices. The university implements measures to counter harassment and any form of pressure, creating a safe and respectful working environment.

Student support at the University is aimed at creating a favorable and supportive learning environment. Students are provided with psychological support (KarIU Psychological Service Page), which facilitates adaptation and successful learning. As part of inclusive education, support is provided by tutors and academic advisors (curators) who ensure individualized guidance for students. Online consultations and adaptive formats of learning materials are also available, taking into account diverse educational needs.

By decision of the Academic Council, students in need of social support are granted a tuition discount ranging from 10% to 30%.
