Department History

The history of the department «Metallurgy of iron and steel» begins in 1963 (the year of the formation of the Plant-HTEI). The organization of the department of metallurgical profile was caused by the need to train qualified personnel on the job to service the blast-furnace and steel-smelting industries of the Karaganda Metallurgical Plant. The first head of the department was the acting dean of the metallurgical faculty Ayukov A.S. (1963-1964). Then Nam B.P. was appointed to the post of head of the department.

Later, the department was renamed the department «Metallurgy of ferrous metals», which since 1966 was headed by Kapustin I.V., and in 1972 the department was divided into two departments: «Iron metallurgy» and «Steel metallurgy». The first department was headed by Artykbaev O.A. (1972-1983), in 1983-1990 - Tleugabulov S.M., and the second department was headed by Umarov K. (1981-1988). In 1990, two departments were again merged into one department «Metallurgy of iron and steel» under the leadership of Tleugabulov S.M. (1990-1993, 1996-2001) and Nikitin G.M. (1993-1996).

In 1968, the Department of Technology of Metals and Foundry Production was separated from the Department of Ferrous Metallurgy (since 1976 - the Department of Foundry), which was headed by Kostin A.V. (1968-1973), Shnaiderman M.E. (1973-1976), Pinchuk E.I. (1976-1983), Shugol B.M. (1984-1992), Kimanov B.M. (1992-1996).

In 1981, the department «Technology of metals and metal science» was created at the Plant-HTEI, which in 1989 was renamed into the department «Metal science and physics of metals». Over the years, the department was headed by Zhukushev Sh.M. (1981-1982), Kanaev A.T. (1982-1985 ) Nechaev Yu.S. (1985-1992).

In 1997, the department was renamed into the Department of Metal Science, Physics of Metals and Foundry. Head of the newly formed department in 1997-1999 was Musin D.K. From 1999-2005 the department was headed by Boranbayeva B.M.

In 2001, the department «Metallurgy of cast iron and steel» was renamed the department «Metallurgy of ferrous and non-ferrous metals», which until 2003 was headed by Tleugabulov S.M., from 2003-2008. – Torgovets A.K. In September 2008, the department was renamed again and became known as the department «Metallurgy».

In 2005, the Department of Metallurgy, Physics of Metals and Foundry was transformed into the Department of Materials Science and Technology of New Materials, which was headed by Reshotkina E.N. (2005-2007) and Nurumgaliev A.Kh. (2007-2009).

In September 2009, the departments «Metallurgy» and «Materials Science and Technology of New Materials» were merged. On their basis, the department «Metallurgy and Materials Science» was created, which at different times was headed by: Torgovets A.K. (2009-2014), Toleuova A.R. (2014-2017), Andreyashchenko V.A. (2017-2018), Nurumgaliev A.Kh. (2018-2020), Yerzhanov A.S. (2020-2024).
