General Information

The department provides training for highly qualified specialists in the fields of information technologies, automation, and artificial intelligence at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels. Educational activities are focused on developing practice-oriented and research competencies in line with the modern requirements of the digital economy and the labor market.

The department offers bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree programs in the fields of information technologies and automation. The educational process is based on the use of modern teaching technologies, project-based learning, and a practice-oriented approach.

Faculty members actively cooperate with leading international IT companies and educational platforms, including Cisco Networking Academy, Huawei, and Kaspersky, providing students with opportunities to complete certified training programs in key areas of the IT industry such as computer networks, cybersecurity, the Internet of Things, and others. Upon successful completion of the courses, students receive relevant certificates.

Graduates of the department successfully pursue professional careers as software developers, automation specialists, computer network and information security engineers, and also hold managerial positions in IT companies and industrial organizations. Ongoing interaction with graduates contributes to the continuous updating of educational programs and the strengthening of the practical orientation of education.

Department History

In 1996, the first enrollment of students for the specialty "Automation, telemechanics and Communications in metallurgy" was carried out, the department «Automation, Telemechanics and Computer Engineering» was formed, the heads of the department in different years were M.K. Zeyneshev, V.I. Barbaev.

The first graduation of students of this specialty took place in 2002.

In 2009 a license for the specialty «Computer engineering and software», was obtained, in the same year the first enrollment for training in this specialty was made.

In 2012 a new department «Information Technologies and Natural Science disciplines» was formed. The head of the department was doctor of technical sciences, professor V.V. Yavorskiy.

In 2013, the first graduation of bachelors of the specialty «Computer Engineering and software» will take place.

In 2020, the Department of «Artificial Intelligence Technologies» was organized. The head of the department was PhD Kunaev Vyacheslav Alexandrovich. The department trains bachelors by the educational programs «Software Engineering», «Artificial Intelligence Technologies» and «Automation Systems Engineering», masters in the program «Automation and Control» and PhD doctors in the direction «Automation and Control».

Since January 3, 2024, the acting head of the department is senior lecturer, Master of Engineering and Technology Anastasia Chvanova

Educational Activities

The academic staff of the department carries out the following tasks related to the development of educational and methodological documentation in the state, Russian, and English languages for bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral students:

Development and updating of teaching and learning packages for various academic disciplines.
Development and updating of electronic teaching and learning packages.
Preparation of methodological guidelines for coursework, laboratory and practical assignments, as well as for students’ independent work.
Development and updating of syllabi.
Authorship of textbooks, monographs, and teaching manuals with the assignment of ISBN and copyright.
Development of electronic methodological materials and virtual laboratory works.
Preparation and updating of assessment and testing materials for knowledge control.
Compilation and updating of lecture notes.

All educational and methodological documentation undergoes discussion at departmental meetings, is subsequently coordinated with the faculty dean and the Director of the Department of Academic Policy, and is finally approved by the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs.

Teachers of the department successfully cooperate with the CISCO Network Academy, Huawei, Kaspersky companies, providing an opportunity for university students to take courses in various areas of the IT industry (introduction to building hardware systems and networks, cybersecurity, Internet of Things, etc.). After successful completion of the courses, students are issued a certificate

Graduates of the department successfully realize themselves in professional activities, occupy managerial positions, they are qualified specialists in the field of software development and computer network design. Thanks to the interaction with graduates, the educational programs of the department are constantly updated and updated. Meetings of graduates and students are held periodically, at which graduates share their experience and talk about their work.

Material and technical base

The material and technical base of educational programs in the field of information technology and automation at Karaganda Industrial University is characterized by a good level of equipment for specialized laboratories:

«Huawei ICT Academy» (222) is equipped with IT-Alem personal desktop network simulators for training in protection and attack technologies, as well as 10 monoblocks. Classes on information security, system administration and network technologies are held here..
The Digital Technologies Competence Cente (I-220) is equipped with 18 computers, a projector and a screen. Software installed: Matlab, Compass, EWB, Microsoft Office and others. The center is used to study disciplines in the field of automation, control and engineering engineering. Students study Cisco ICT Academy courses here.
Automation Equipment Laboratory (N-101) includes a variety of laboratory stands (based on SIEMENS, LOGO, ET-200S), software and hardware complexes from FESTO and SIEMENS, an interactive whiteboard and training simulators. It is used for teaching pneumatic and hydraulic automation, SCADA systems, industrial networks, and SMART technologies..
The Software and Database Development Laboratory (I-336) is equipped with 8 modern computers, a projector and a screen. Software such as Microsoft Visual Studio, AllFusion Process Modeler, Electronic Workbench and others are used. Classes on programming, machine learning, and IP design are held here.
The specialized auditorium on architecture of computing systems (I-311) is equipped with a laboratory stand for studying network technologies. Classes on information security, databases, and expert systems are held here.
The laboratory "Internet Technologies and Web Programming" (I-214) contains 15 new computers, a projector and a screen. Development environments and server platforms are installed, including Open Server, Visual Studio, and others. It is used for courses on web development, ERP systems and information and communication technologies.

Practice Bases and Partners

The department has established strong partnerships with industry and internship providers. Department branches operate at leading enterprises in the region, offering students hands-on experience in real-world professional settings. This cooperation helps students develop practical skills, improves employability, and ensures the curriculum aligns with labor market demands.

Notably, in December 2024, a dual education agreement was signed with KazMetallurgAvtomatika, allowing students to combine university study with work at the enterprise.
